Sunsets & Hawks
Today is a windy one. But there is redemption to it because it seems to blow the clouds mostly away. That helps to let the sun shine.
We live on a hill and I looked out the window and saw a beautiful hawk that seemed to be poised in the same place for a very long time. Once in a while, he would flap his wings, or turn his tail, but he was floating in the wind's current. He seemed to be enjoying himself. Perhaps he liked the scenery, observing that which was before him. It reminded me of how a hang glider seems to not move but just be with the wind. There is power in his ability to soar and yet look free and calm. I have read that animals have meanings and the hawk's is "messenger". Yesterday, there were two hawks sitting on the same tree branch. A large nest was nearby and maybe that is where they dwell. I like knowing that they are close to me. I enjoy the connection to them and to nature.
Sunday evening gave me a beautiful sunset to watch. It reminded me of the poem by Emily Dickinson.

A DAY
I'll tell you how the sun rose, -
A ribbon at a time.
The steeples swam in amethyst,
The news like squirrels ran.
The hills untied their bonnets,
The bobolinks begun.
Then I said softly to myself,
"That must have been the sun!"
This has been a favorite of mine for years. I know it is telling of the sunrise, but to me it can also be an apt description of the day's end. Today's sun is near setting and each one is different. Each day is different. Until the next time...
